Paine relishing opportunity

Paine relishing opportunity

11/09/2009 11:46 AM

Stand-in Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine admits he has struggled to adjust to the slower English pitches and playing in front of bigger crowds than the ones he's used to with Tasmania.

Paine was called up to the national squad for the current best-of-seven one-day series against the old enemy in place of injured No.1 gloveman Brad Haddin.

The 24-year-old has opened the batting in the first three matches but began the series in the worst possible fashion with a duck.

However, despite describing the experience of so many spectators watching his every move as 'nerve-wracking', Paine has relished the chance of facing the new ball.

And the Tasmanian is beginning to find his feet on the international stage with knocks of 26 and 29 in his last two outings to the crease.

"I suppose I've struggled a little bit," Paine told CATV.

"The innings' that I've got in I've got to sort of 20 and 30 and got out probably as a result of the pitch being a bit slower and me trying to force it."

"So it's something I'm working on and just trying to be more patient and work my way through it."

"It's been exciting, obviously the big crowds and that sort of stuff was a bit nerve-wracking at the start but it's slowly starting to get used to it."

Paine is in the team primarily for his glove work and he admits keeping to Australian quicks Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee has been a different experience compared with standing behind the stumps for state team-mates Ben Hilfenhaus and Brett Geeves.

"It's a different level again but obviously keeping to 'Hilfy' and 'Geevesy' in Tassie have helped me in good stead for it," he said.

"But (it's) something I'm enjoying, standing back a long way and getting the ball flying through."

Australia leads England 3-0 and requires just one more victory to wrap up the series.
