Ponting's men still No.1

09/07/2008 7:54 AM

Australia is still the No.1 team in the world according to the latest release of the ICC Test Championship table.

Ricky Ponting's men, who completed a 2-0 series victory over West Indies last month, holds a 23-point lead over South Africa, which moved above England and India into second courtesy of the updated rankings.

The latest release no longer takes into consideration series finished prior to August 1 2005, which means South Africa's series losses against Sri Lanka, India and England were scrapped from calculations.

The Proteas must avoid a series defeat in its upcoming four-Test battle with England to avoid losing second place. The English can claim second if they whitewash the Proteas.

India can climb back to second if England wins by 2-0, 3-1 or 3-0.
