Redbacks to push on

Redbacks to push on

03/11/2009 10:00 PM

South Australia is hoping its fighting effort on the final day of its Sheffield Shield match against Victoria will convert into winning momentum when the sides meet in their Ford Ranger Cup clash at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

The Redbacks scored 1-220 on Monday, and 3-340 overall in their second innings, to deprive the Bushrangers of outright points.

Not only did the stubborn performance give its batsmen confidence, it also kept the visiting team in the field for more than eight hours while Adelaide experienced and early blast of summer.

Redbacks coach Mark Sorell says the way the game unfolded may give his players a slight edge ahead of the mid-week limited overs clash.

"I think you can gain an advantage from the fact most guys are pretty fit now and have to deal with that fairly regularly, so it's not a shock to them, but it was a hot day for the majority of yesterday, we kept them out there for a while so I'm hoping that has given them a bit of an edge," Sorell said.

"We talked about that in the rooms last night, carrying that form into this one-day game."

Bushrangers captain David Hussey, who spoke immediately after the Shield draw, admitted the team's long stint in the field had taken its toll.

"A bit of pride taken out of the game but we still get two points out of it and look forward to Wednesday in the Ford Ranger Cup match," Hussey said.

"There's a few tired bodies in the dressing room so we are going to get into the ice baths and have some physio and we'll see what we come up with."

"Our batters are pretty settled, it's just the fast bowlers, we've got great depth with our fast bowlers so a good time to start rotating them."

That rotation has seen Shane Harwood and Damien Wright brought into the side while batsman Aaron Finch has also been included. They replace Nick Jewell, Dirk Nannes and 12th man Lloyd Mash from the Shield team.

Darren Pattinson remains in the squad after flying in to replace Clint McKay for the final day of the Shield game, with McKay now in India after being called into the Australian squad.

The Redbacks have also made changes to the side which lost its past two FRC matches. Wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman will continue to take the gloves in Graham Manou's absence while all-rounder Matthew Weeks comes into replace the hamstrung Mark Cosgrove.

Cosgrove will be missed but Sorell said Weeks added greater flexibility to the line-up.

"He's shown some good form in club cricket and he played well when he played with us last year so we hope he'll come in and have some good performances for us," Sorell said.

"It (Week's game) is pretty appealing in the one-day game, he bowls at good pace and can swing it and hits the ball well and catches pretty well so he's a pretty attractive player for us in the short forms."

Brad Hodge is the obvious danger man for the Redbacks after making a century in his past three games at Adelaide Oval.

But Sorell said it's his own side's batting that'll need to improve if they are to record their first win of the season.

"Our batting has probably missed a beat in a couple of those games, we haven't posted the totals we probably should've and were aiming to do and that makes it hard for your bowlers because the (opposition) batters aren't attacking," he said.

"A lot of other states at the moment have guys batting all the way down, we probably don't have that at the moment so the inclusion of guys like Matthew Weeks helps strengthen that line-up."

"If the majority of our seven or eight batters don't do the job then you are under the pump anyway."
