SA claims dramatic win

01/12/2008 6:47 PM

A sparkling century from Michael Klinger has seen South Australia claim a dramatic three-wicket outright win over Queensland on day four of the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.

Klinger's man-of-the-match four-hour stay at the crease came to an end during a tense final session, but his 137 was enough for the Redbacks to finish at 7-334 and claim the full six points with just 13 balls spare.

It was the first time South Australia recorded an outright win since the corresponding fixture last season, but it was never a sure thing as the closely contested match culminated in a thrilling finish.

The equation was simple when the Bulls took the second new ball, with the Redbacks, 4-255 at the time, needing 79 runs from the final 18 overs.

The game, as it had done over the whole four days, continued to ebb and flow as former-Redback Ryan Harris and Chris Swan swung the shiny ball ferociously.

Harris made an immediate impact, clean bowling South Australian skipper Graham Manou in the first over of his final spell.

Aaron O'Brien bravely left a couple of deliveries that went within centimetres of crashing into the off stump while Klinger's back leg somehow saved him from playing on after a thick inside edge.

The match lifted in tempo when Klinger was dismissed in astonishing fashion.

An attempted pull shot from Klinger saw a top edge fly high into the sky and a sprinting Lee Carseldine was able to somehow make the distance and complete a diving catch.

A stumbling South Australian side had lost 4-45 at that stage, but the Bulls' hopes of stealing victory took a telling blow four balls later when second slip Shane Watson dropped O'Brien when he was on four.

It was the fourth catch to go down in the innings, coming on the back of three reprieves handed out by the home side to Callum Ferguson in the first innings when he crashed 132.

The home side never recovered, with Daniel Christian (30) and O'Brien (26 not out) playing gutsy knocks to squeeze out the runs required.

Christian fell when the visitors needed four more runs, but Shaun Tait was not required to face a ball and O'Brien brought up the win with a slashing boundary.
Klinger notched his third first-class ton since crossing over from Victoria during the off-season to see his season's run tally go to a competition-best 775 at the staggering average of 110.7.

The visitors reached the tea break cruising at 2-202, with Klinger an unbeaten 99, and required another 132 runs in what proved to be a gripping final session.

The Redbacks looked to be in control and the Bulls' chances of victory appeared to be slim when Queensland skipper Chris Simpson dropped a simple chance offered by Klinger when he was on 109.

But the Bulls were gallant and a remarkable fielding effort from James Hopes saw the end of Cameron Borgas (60), who was given a life on 12.

Borgas smashed a short delivery from Watson to mid-wicket where Hopes showed his teammates how to hold them in spectacular fashion.

Flinging himself at the leather, Hopes skillfully snared the ball mid-air to end a stubborn 136-run stand and reduce South Australia to 3-235.

Spurred on by the magnificent take, Hopes clean bowled Ferguson the next over to give the home side a sniff of victory.

Manou was under pressure and it showed, he tentatively played and missed on a number of occasions and survived two confident lbw appeals before falling to the new ball as there threatened to be another twist in the tale.

But the visitors were able to hold firm and recorded their first outright win for a year.
