Tasmania on track for points

Tasmania is poised to claim first-innings points against Queensland after putting itself in a commanding position at stumps on the second day of their Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday.

Half-centuries to opener Rhett Lockyear (85) and Alex Doolan (66) have helped the Tigers to a healthy 3-251 - a deficit of just 75 runs - after bowling Queensland out for 326 earlier in the day.

Captain George Bailey (49) and Daniel Marsh (21) are the not-out batsmen for the hosts.

Nathan Reardon (1-37) got the breakthrough when he had Ed Cowan (22) caught behind to end Tasmania's 61-run opening stand.

But that brought Lockyear and Doolan together and the pair put on another 106 runs for the second wicket.

Lockyear pillaged 14 boundaries, before he too was caught behind off Luke Feldman (1-59), while Doolan registered 11 fours.

Doolan handed Bulls wicketkeeper Chris Hartley his third catch of the innings when the Tiger was tempted into a hook shot by Ben Cutting (1-49) to leave the visitors 3-190.

But Bailey, who has eight boundaries to his credit, and Marsh have since combined to compile another strong Tasmanian partnership and their unbeaten union has yielded 61 runs.

Earlier, the Bulls added 82 to their overnight score before the hosts managed to wrap up the tail, with Chris Simpson scoring 33 before he was the last man out, leaving No.11 Feldman unbeaten on 31 having faced only 25 deliveries.

Fast bowler Adam Griffith made the ideal return from injury, capturing 5-85 from 30 overs, with Adam Maher (2-47 from 20) and Brendan Drew (2-76 from 26) chiming in with two wickets each and Tim MacDonald (1-86 from 25) claiming the other wicket.

Griffith gained the initial breakthrough in the morning when he accepted a return catch from Cutting (eight) but the visitors frustrated Tasmania with the final two wickets adding 70 runs in a fine rearguard.

Chris Swan helped Simpson add 34 for the ninth wicket before Griffith completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Swan for 12 but with Feldman hitting out Queensland went beyond 300 before Drew knocked Simpson over.

Wade Townsend and Hartley had rescued Queensland from a disastrous 4-39 on Monday, the pair adding 172 for the fifth wicket as Townsend grabbed his second first-class century with 121 and Hartley added 68.
