Tigers launch 17-over assault

Tasmania has set South Australia a winning target of 131 in its rain-reduced Ford Ranger Cup match at Bellerive Oval.

The Tigers made 7-130 in their 17 overs, with captain George Bailey top scoring with 35 off 29 deliveries. Luke Butterworth contributed a quick-fire 22 while Brett Geeves and Brendan Drew also took 24 off the last two overs and were the unbeaten batsmen.

Jake Haberfield took 3-22 while Shaun Tait, Chris Duval, Dan Christian and Aaron O'Brien took a wicket each.

The Redbacks will need to score at 7.71 per over to record their first win of the season with their innings to feature a total of seven powerplay overs.

Debutant Wade Irvine opened the batting and was under pressure from the opening delivery when the Redbacks thought they had him caught behind without scoring.

Irvine did crack a boundary through point in the same over but didn't last much longer, eventually, caught in the covers by Christian off Duval.

His opening partner Michael Dighton followed him back to sheds in the following over after nicking a Tait delivery through to wicketkeeper Graham Manou.

Travis Birt and Ed Cowan, who scored a double century against South Australia during the week, were then dismissed cheaply but the fall of captain Bailey was the big wicket.

Bailey was scoring quickly and smashed two sixes - one through the leg side and the other over the mid-off fence - before he was caught and bowled by Haberfield when the score was 73.

Butterworth and Jason Krejza's sixth wicket partnership gained momentum when the duo took 17 off a Duval over. But the duo went in quick succession with Krejza gone for eight and Butterworth skying a catch to Michael Klinger at midwicket.

It was then left to Geeves and Drew to finish the innings in style.
