Tasmania has restricted Queensland to 9-211 at stumps on the opening day of their Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday.

The Bulls were losing wickets at regular intervals and it seemed only a matter of time before they were all out, but bad light stopped play in the 79th over.

Ben Hilfenhaus was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers on the first day, finishing with the figures of 2-25 from 17 overs, while Luke Butterworth chipped in with three crucial wickets.

Chris Hartley has made a stubborn 21 from 55 balls and will resume on day two with Chris Swan who is yet to score.

The Bulls were struggling early at 3-72 before Lee Carseldine and Clinton Perren (34) combined for a valuable partnership to get the visitors back on track, but a wicked Hilfenhaus short ball caught Carseldine in the rib cage forcing him to retire hurt.

Queensland reached 4-168 at the tea break, but then it was the Butterworth show. In the first over, Chris Simpson edged one through to wicketkeeper David Dawson and it was the same story for James Hopes, who was caught behind slashing at a wide delivery.

Carseldine also returned to the crease but only added a further two runs before a great catch at mid-off by James Faulkner off the bowling of Butterworth had him back to the pavilion for 40.

Ryan Harris and Nathan Rimmington were both removed by Tim MacDonald and both failed to score as the visitors fell to 9-207.

The rest of the Bulls recognised batters have all failed to make an impact with Ryan Broad (0) and Martin Love (16) falling cheaply.

Opener Nick Kruger produced the best performance for Queensland with a well-worked knock of 41.

However, he was dismissed when he edged Faulkner's fifth ball of the match to George Bailey in third slip who held on to a good catch on his second attempt after performing a juggling act.
