Vics close in on points

An unbeaten 171-run partnership between centurion Chris Rogers and Brad Hodge has Victoria powering towards first-innings points in its Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

The Bushrangers scored 152 runs in the second session to be 1-273 at tea and need only 20 more to surpass the Redbacks' 292.

Rogers moved from 68 to 148 and has hit 22 boundaries and a mid-wicket six off Peter George in his 181-ball innings while Hodge has effortlessly moved to 79 and has hit 54 of his runs in boundaries.

South Australia's bowling attack struggled for direction early in the day and is lacking penetration as Dan Christian (1-73) is the only medium-pacer to back openers George and Jake Haberfield.

Spin duo Aaron O'Brien and Cullen Bailey have had little impact and have conceded 81 from 16 overs with Rogers and Hodge happy to take the aerial route to the boundary off their bowling.

Mark Cosgrove was expected to share in the load but left the field before lunch with a tight hamstring.

The Bushrangers had no problems keeping the scoreboard ticking in the hour after lunch and both batsmen brought up their personal milestones in a hurry.

Rogers hit three boundaries in four Bailey deliveries with the third - a pull shot to the square leg pickets - bringing up the ton.

Hodge brought up his half century after drinks with two lofted drives for four during an O'Brien over.

The No. 3 was then dropped on 54 by a diving Daniel Harris at short mid-on.

The Victorian's innings was set up by a 102-run stand between Rogers and Nick Jewell (39 runs) with the duo smashing 20 of the team's 22 boundaries of the morning.

Rogers started the day in an aggressive mood, striking 16 runs off the opening three overs.

Jewell was slower to start and was given a life when he was on three - Mark Cosgrove grassed a catch at first slip.

But the close call sparked a positive reaction from the right hander who began to play some handsome drives and cut shots.

The Bushrangers also had the better of the Redbacks on the opening day after bowling the home side out.

Wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman made 62 on debut and shared in a critical 99-run partnership with Christian while Cosgrove (53) and Aaron O'Brien (47) were the other major contributors.
