Paul Barbieri at the WACA Ground
Victoria has returned to the top of the Sheffield Shield table, having overhauled the 318 it needed to defeat Western Australia by six wickets at the WACA ground.
In an enthralling match throughout, former Warrior Chris Rogers underlined his class by batting all the way through Victoria's innings on the final day, posting 147 runs as he scored his second century of the match and saw Victoria home with just seven balls to spare before its minimum overs for the day were completed.
His efforts, along with a brisk 87 from David Hussey and Andrew McDonald's composed 60, were enough to see Victoria claim the outright win after the Warriors declared midway through the morning session at 8-404, setting Victoria a target of 318 from a minimum 74 overs.
For Rogers, the two centuries would have been extra special, coming after a somewhat acrimonious departure from the WACA last summer.
It was just the second time in Australian domestic history that two players from opposing teams had both scored centuries in each innings.
Queensland's Matthew Hayden and South Australia's Paul Nobes were the last to achieve the feat during a match in Adelaide during the 1993/94 season.
It also continues a sensational run with the bat for Rogers as he became the highest run scorer in the competition this season with 621 runs at an average of 88.7.
The outright win sees Victoria return to the top of the Sheffield Shield with 22 points from five matches, after Queensland (18 points) had briefly held top spot following its win over New South Wales earlier in the day.
The Warriors remain in third with 12 points, although both their outright wins came in the first two matches of the summer.
Victoria's run chase got off to the worst possible start, though, when Nick Jewell (zero) was caught behind off Steve Magoffin's bowling with the second ball of the innings.
Rob Quiney (18) also fell cheaply just after lunch when he was caught behind off a superb Brett Dorey delivery that swung into the batsman.
But in the meantime, Rogers picked up where he left off when he scored 115 in the first innings.
And, with Hussey along for the ride, the pair blasted the Warriors' attack, putting on a 168-run third-wicket partnership in 223 balls.
Hussey's wicket gave WA some scant hope of an outright win, when he was also caught behind taking a rare wild swipe at a Dorey delivery.
Bushrangers skipper Cameron White then came and went rapidly, attempting to bash Dorey out of the ground and being caught in the deep by Luke Pomersbach off the second ball he faced.
But McDonald steadied the ship for Victoria, making up for a lean run at the WACA where his previous three innings had all ended in ducks, by making a chanceless 60 runs as he and Rogers put on a 108-run partnership to win a sensational match for Victoria.
Dorey was the best of the WA bowlers, following up his 5-104 in the first innings with 3-75 on the final day. Steve Magoffin was the other wicket-taker with figures of 1-91, although the lanky paceman looked far short of his best.
Earlier in the day, WA had declared at 8-404 following a record eighth-wicket century partnership by Magoffin and Dorey.
The pair came in just before stumps on the third day with the Bushrangers having just taken 3-3 to leave the Warriors floundering at 7-286 with a lead of just 199 runs over Victoria's first innings 326.
But having survived the last few overs on Sunday, the pair produced a swashbuckling stand during the opening session on the final day as Magoffin took to the bowling, hitting an unbeaten 66 while Dorey added 39.
Dorey eventually fell as he and Magoffin attempted to lift the scoring rate but their 113-run stand was a new record eighth-wicket partnership by WA against Victoria.
