Vics still keen on Pattinson

Vics still keen on Pattinson

Darren Pattinson's foray into Test cricket is unlikely to have any bearing on his playing future with Victoria.

The Bushrangers will have to list the English-born Pattinson as a foreign player after the former roof-tiler burst on to the international scene with his shock selection for England last week.

But that won't jeopardise his playing contract with Victoria. The Bushrangers regard him as an important player following the off-season departures of Gerard Denton and Allan Wise.

"Unless he becomes a contracted player in England and they have first call on him and want to take him here there and everywhere, we would expect that he comes back and plays for us as an overseas player," Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd told Sportal.

"Our group's very even and very deep and he's one we rate highly. He's important to us in terms of our depth."

Pattinson's meteoric rise to Test cricket has been one of the game's most remarkable stories in recent years.

The 29-year-old did not make his first-class debut until early 2007 when injuries to a string of Bushrangers pacemen saw him drafted into the Victorian set-up.

Pattinson, who returned figures of 2-96 in his Test debut, has been the subject of stinging criticism from sections of England's unforgiving press and former Test captains such as Graham Gooch and Nasser Hussain.

Shipperd was confident Pattinson would not be weighed down by the drama.

"He's pretty quiet and goes about his business. He doesn't really show his emotion incredibly," Shipperd said.

"It will be a testing time for him and his wife and his family and they're in a different environment and it's been quite public."

"I hope they're strong for each other and our boys wish him strength and positive things."

"I hope he gets another chance to again prove his level of play. He certainly didn't disgrace himself though their team had a poor result."
