Vics turn the screws

Vics turn the screws

04/11/2009 4:32 PM

Victoria has made an impressive start to its Ford Ranger Cup campaign with some early wickets in its match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

The Bushrangers' decision to bowl first was justified when they took 3-47 and after 25 overs have the Redbacks 4-83.

Darren Pattinson has 2-18 off seven overs while Shane Harwood and Damien Wright took a wicket each.

Cameron Borgas is starting to play some strokes after a cautious start and is 26 from 52 deliveries while Aaron O'Brien (3) is the other not out batsmen.

The Bushrangers struck early with Redbacks captain Daniel Harris, who made an unbeaten 166 in the Shield match on Monday, dismissed for seven.

He chased a wide Harwood delivery and was dropped by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade but caught by first slip Aaron Finch on the rebound.

It continued South Australia's opening partnership woes with the team averaging just under 11 runs for the first wicket in its three FRC matches this season.

No. 3 Tom Cooper was trapped leg before wicket three over later and the Redbacks were in familiar but unwelcome territory at 2-29.

James Smith has had some positive innings in the four-day format but is struggling to have an impact in the limited overs arena. He failed for the second time in as many games, nicking a Pattinson delivery for just two.

The rush of wickets dried up the runs and South Australia went 20 deliveries without scoring and run and made just four runs in the bowling powerplay.

Victoria continued to tighten the screws and the pressure finally got to the out-of-sorts Michael Klinger. He was caught at point by Rob Quiney for 29 off 54 deliveries.

Before the game the Redbacks made the sensible decision to strengthen its batting line-up by including all-rounder Matthew Weeks and relegating Peter George to 12th man.

Harwood, Finch and Wright come into the Victorian side which took first-innings points against South Australia in the recent Shield fixture between the two teams while Bryce McGain has been named 12th man.
