New Zealand's confidence heading into Thursday's Champions Trophy opener was given a major boost with a convincing 103-run win over India in Potchefstroom.
Under pressure to perform ahead of the tournament opener against host South Africa, New Zealand's batsmen stood up to compile 7-301 in 50 overs.
It was the younger brigade that led the way as Neil Broom (66), Martin Guptill (63) and Jesse Ryder (57) all notched half-centuries against a strong Indian bowling line-up.
India never looked likely to chase down the total and was bowled out for 198 in 40.3 overs.
Shane Bond (2-38), captain Daniel Vettori (2-46) and Jacob Oram (2-26) all snared two each as India failed to register an individual 50.
An early Ryder blitzkrieg, slapping 10 fours and a six in his 48-ball stay, set the tone for New Zealand.
He combined well with Guptill in a 60-run second wicket stand until being caught and bowled by left-arm paceman RP Singh.
Grant Elliot (30) and Ross Taylor (23) also made starts in the middle order but failed to go on with the job.
It became a non-issue when Broom strode to the crease and pounded India all around the ground in a 46-ball stay that featured five fours and four sixes.
If there was one criticism of New Zealand's efforts, it was that no one in the top six pushed on to three figures or provided an anchor to the innings.
However, posting in excess of 300 was a major positive and it was followed by a disciplined bowling and fielding effort to keep India's dangerous batsmen under wraps.
Rahul Dravid threatened to get away until he was bowled by off-spinner Jeetan Patel for 37 off 34 and Guptill effected the first of his two run-outs to dismiss Suresh Raina for 31.
It was all over bar the shouting when India then collapsed to 130-7 and only Abhishek Nayar's fightback with 41 saved some face.
The comprehensive victory comes at a perfect time ahead of New Zealand's daunting opener against South Africa, the side which has been billed as the tournament favourite.
