Warriors clinch win

24/10/2008 10:01 PM

Theo Doropoulos and Adam Voges have inspired a brilliant Western Australian fightback to ensure the Warriors a four-wicket win over Tasmania in their rain-affected Ford Ranger Cup clash at the WACA Ground on Friday night.

Ultimately set 212 for victory after a second rain delay late in the match, following Tasmania's effort of 9-222 in the first innings, David Bandy hit a six with four balls remaining in the contest to take WA to 6-217.

Doropoulos (92) and Voges (56) came together after 19 overs with their side in a spot of bother at 4-73 and initially chasing 227 for victory.

But the pair combined superbly to put on 123 for the fifth wicket and steer the Warriors to a hard fought victory.

Brett Geeves (2-35) and Brendan Drew (2-59) were the multiple wicket-takers for the Tigers.

After starting its innings at better than a run a ball, WA was stopped in its tracks late in the third over as Sean Marsh, who has been called up to the Australian squad in place of injured back-up opening batsman Phil Jaques, was dismissed by Geeves for 13.

Marsh's stint came to an end when he edged a Geeves delivery that cut away from his body straight to Dan Marsh at first slip.

And it wasn't long before the Tigers had their second with Luke Ronchi (zero) sent packing 16 balls later, reducing the home team to 2-21.

That wicket brought North to the crease and his partnership with Luke Pomersbach was designed to stabilise the innings.

Although almost seven overs went by without a wicket, few runs flowed either and in the 13th over their 11-run union came to a close as North (four) edged Drew to hand Dan Marsh his second catch of the innings at slip.

With the score on 3-32, Voges entered the fray and combined with Pomersbach beautifully to get the Warriors' innings back on track.

Pomersbach started playing his strokes and his innings included four boundaries and a six but with the score on 73 he skied a ball and became Drew's second victim with George Bailey taking a screamer in the deep.

However, Doropoulos - who smashed his 92 off just 75 deliveries and recorded six boundaries and three sixes - and Voges steadied the ship from that point on.

Earlier, The Tigers started like a rocket, shrugging off a 50-minute rain delay 11 overs into the match, as they posted their first 50 runs in 52 deliveries and their 100 off 112.

But the dismissal of opener Tim Paine (38) with the score at 82, allowed the Warriors attack back into the encounter and regular wickets from then on prevented Tasmania from posting a 250-plus total.

Tigers skipper Dan Marsh led from the front, top-scoring for the visitors as he made a classy 51 from 59 balls.

But when he was stumped by Luke Ronchi after dancing down the pitch in an attempt to slog spinner Aaron Heal (3-39) out of the park, it sparked a mini collapse that saw Tasmania lose 4-38, ending its innings at 9-222.

Michael Dighton (39) and Paine (38) were solid contributors too but following the first rain delay Ben Edmondson (3-47) finally got the breakthrough, getting an edge from Paine who was caught by Ronchi behind the stumps.

First drop Dane Anderson didn't last long, making just six runs before attempting a pull shot off Brett Dorey (1-36), his effort being edged to Ronchi once more.

After being taken out of the attack following his dreadful fifth over which yielded 17 runs, Steve Magoffin redeemed himself by getting Dighton to edge the ball with the first delivery of his new spell, giving Ronchi his third catch of the day.

Dan Marsh and Bailey (18) put on 42 runs before Bailey tangled himself up attempting to cut Edmondson, edging another one to Ronchi.

As North swung the bowling changes, Marsh looked to lift the run rate, taking Edmondson for 10 runs off one over before looking to smash Heal around as well. The Tasmanian skipper belted Heal over the boundary to make his 50 but the spinner got his revenge two balls later when Marsh was stumped.

Heal struck again in his next over, claiming Travis Birt's (nine) wicket as the batsman went the slog and was caught at long-on by Pomersbach.
Tailenders Drew (five), Geeves (seven) and Mark Divin (19) soon followed as the Tigers' innings ended with a whimper after starting with a bang.
