Brazil no match for Opals

Brazil no match for Opals

29/07/2008 8:34 AM

The Opals showed they were on track for a fruitful Olympic campaign when they outgunned Brazil 99-62 in Wollongong on Monday night.

The world champion Opals were far too strong for a rebuilding Brazilian outfit missing its starting five from the World Championships.

In contrast, the Australians were close to full strength, missing only guard Kristi Harrower, who was rested with a minor ankle injury. The match was Australia's first with its complete squad this campaign.

Leading by nine points at half time, the Opals made a decisive break in the third quarter when it embarked on a 20-0 run.

Lauren Jackson finished the night with 19 points and seven rebounds despite spending only 22 minutes on the court.

Penny Taylor scored 17 points and collected seven rebounds and six assists, while Belinda Snell shot six of eight from the field for 16 points.

Importantly for the Opals, they were also able to swing the rotations from the bench to give the full squad as much game time as possible.

"It's amazing to play on a team where the second unit gives us so much," Taylor enthused.

"We played all 11 girls in the first quarter tonight which is practically unheard of and it's fantastic to have a team with this much depth."

The second and final match of the series will be played at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night.
