McCaw named for All Blacks

McCaw named for All Blacks

22/07/2008 1:06 PM

The All Blacks have sprung five changes for this week's opening Bledisloe Cup Test against Australia in Sydney, including the bracketing of Richie McCaw.

There are switches at centre, prop, lock, openside flanker and wing from the side that lost 28-30 to South Africa in Dunedin a week and a half ago.

The word 'rotation' is likely to dominate discussions about All Black coach Graham Henry's latest selections, although two of the changes are linked to returns from injury and suspension.

The main talking point is the bracketing of McCaw at No.7 alongside Daniel Braid.

Although McCaw has taken a full part in training early in the week, his injured ankle will continued to be monitored and a final decision will be made later in the week.

"Richie is coming through well but we don't know whether he is going to be ready for the weekend," Henry said.

"I think he's a 50-50 [chance] really - we will just see how he progresses during the week.

"The expectation was that he wasn't going to be ready until next week at the earliest so we just have to wait and see."

Another surprise comes with 23-year-old Richard Kahui's inclusion at centre where he takes over from Conrad Smith. Kahui, who has just one Test cap to his name, is charged with the responsibility of shutting down Wallabies star Stirling Mortlock - a veteran of 67 Tests.

The previously suspended Brad Thorn comes back into lock to replace Anthony Boric, Greg Somerville is preferred at tighthead prop to John Afoa and Anthony Tuitavake is brought onto the right wing in place of Blues Super 14 team-mate Rudi Wulf.

Andy Ellis retains his halfback spot despite earlier rumours that he was to be replaced in the starting XV by Jimmy Cowan, while Rodney So'oialo and Jerome Kaino are named at No.6 and No.8 respectively which pushes out Adam Thomson.

Wulf will travel to Sydney with the squad as part of a 24-man squad, which will include an extra flanker. This will be Braid if McCaw is deemed fit to play, or Thomson if McCaw's ankle injury has not healed sufficiently.

It's expected that McCaw will captain the side if he does return, while blindside flanker Rodney So'oialo would take the duties in his absence as he did for the opening two Tri Nations matches against South Africa.
