Buddy's glory no concern for Hawks

29/08/2008 1:49 PM

Lance Franklin's chase for his 100th goal of the season might be on in earnest but Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson couldn't care less.

'Buddy' needs just two goals in Saturday night's sell-out clash with Carlton at Telstra Dome to notch up the ton and become the first player since Tony Lockett in 1998 to bring up three figures in a home-and-away season.

But, if Clarkson is to be believed, the impending milestone is the least of his team's concerns.

"Strangely enough, it's not something we've focused enormously on in terms of the 100 goals," Clarkson said before a short, sharp training session at Waverley Park on Friday morning.

"We're more interested in getting our structures right and playing good footy leading into the finals."

"If he only kicks one but our team kicks 15 or 20 goals and we win the game then we're not too fussed with that."

"It's a hysterical theme outside of our footy club but within it's just sticking to the structures and what we do well."

However, Clarkson admitted that the focus - from the media, at least - on Franklin's century had become somewhat of a distraction for his side and was keen to get it over with sooner rather than later.

"I think it's only natural that the sooner we get it out the way the sooner it becomes less of a distraction for our side and for the wider football community," he said.

More than 50,000 fans are expected at Saturday night's match to witness a shootout between Franklin - who is aiming to become the first indigenous player to win the Coleman Medal - and Blues spearhead Brendan Fevola as both close in on the magical 100-goal mark.

Should they both achieve the feat, it would be the first time in VFL/AFL history that two players had reached the milestone in the same match.

Fevola needs eight goals to bring up his ton.

The Blues are unchanged for the match, while Hawthorn has decided to rest veteran Shane Crawford and ruckman Simon Taylor before the finals
