Central wins SANFL flag

Central wins SANFL flag

Central District has won its seventh SANFL premiership in nine years with a 42-point victory over Glenelg at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

After a tight and physical first half, the Bulldogs broke free in the third quarter kicking seven goals to the Tigers' two.

They then killed the contest off with three quick majors in the fourth term and comfortably secured their second grand final win in a row in front of a crowd of 34,128. The final score was 17.11 (113) to 10.11 (71).

Central shared the load with 12 players getting on the scoreboard while Glenelg's Daniel Kirk was a lone hand with three goals.

The Jack Oatey Medal for best on ground was awarded to Bulldogs' ruckman Jason Mackenzie who was particularly influential during the third quarter.

It was a disappointing conclusion to the season for the Tigers who at times threatened to take control of the contest before the long break.

Glenelg made a confident start to the match and got the first goal on the board after Kirk took a strong mark and converted from 25 metres out.

But it didn't take long for Central to work its way into the play and it was up and going once James Gowans found some space inside the arc and kicked truly.

The reigning premiers were starting to find their targets and were moving the ball into attack with some system.

However the difference was just a point at the first break with two free kicks in the Tigers' forward line allowing them claw their way back into contention.

It was all Glenelg in the opening stages of the second quarter and they opened up a seven-point lead when Ty Allen spun out of trouble and snapped from 35 metres.

But their efficiency was disappointing and they registered just 1.4 during their purple patch.

Central was under siege but remained composed and slowed the play down when possible. It then wrestled the initiative away from its opposition thanks to some memorable individual efforts from Ian Callinan and Matthew Westhoff.

Callinan screwed the ball across his body to score against the tide of play while Westhoff dribbled the ball through from a tight angle to help his side regain the lead at the long break.

The Bulldogs put their foot on the pedal after the break and got four decisive centre clearances in a row. MacKenzie kept getting his hand on the footy and helped his team boot four majors in as many minutes to open up a handy buffer.

And when Luke McCabe made the most of a free kick late into the term Central were 37-points in front.

Bulldogs supporters let off flares and began their trademark chants as their side scored three goals in 10 minutes of the fourth quarter.

Former Carlton player Brett Backwell and Luke Panozzo hit back with goals and Kirk took a flier and slotted one from the goal square. But the sting had well and truly been taken out of the contest.
