Crows defend Porplyzia decision

Crows defend Porplyzia decision

29/08/2008 5:39 PM

Adelaide has defended its decision to select the injured Jason Porplyzia, believing the small forward has shown an ability to play through pain.

Porplyzia has spent the past three weeks on the sidelines with concussion but it's his bad shoulder that'll come under the spotlight against the Western Bulldogs at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

His shoulder has popped out of its socket several times this season but the 23-year-old has manfully played on or at least made himself available the next week.

Crows coach Neil Craig said the club and Porplyzia had accepted the positives and negatives of selecting him in the squad.

"That's been normal for him in the last four, five, six weeks or however long it's been. His decision is always, is he able to perform with the shoulder if it gets knocked or if it comes out and goes back in, so his capacity to put up with that," he said.

"Not only has he said he can but he can (put up with it) … the best example I can give is his performance against Sydney."

Craig was also quick to defend the club's approach to Porplyzia's concussion.

"In terms of duty of care I think we've been absolutely crystal clear and diligent with that. We haven't played Jason until he's been cleared from one of the best neurosurgeons in Adelaide so I'm not sure what more we can do."

The importance of finding more scoring options for Adelaide, particularly after they kicked just six goals against St Kilda last week, has cost an experienced Crow a place in the line-up.

Midfielder Brent Reilly, who only recently returned from a knee injury, has made way for Porplyzia and Bernie Vince.

"We need as many possibilities in our forward line as we can get, so Brent understands that," Craig said.

Meanwhile Brad Moran, who kicked four goals against the Tigers in Round 19, has lost his place to Kurt Tippett who is considered more suited for an attacking role. Craig said the decision had to do with his overall game.

"Brad's last three weeks have been OK but probably some of his ruck work has dropped off a bit. Talking to Brad this morning in particular he's got a great attitude to the decision. No way is he out of the selection issues for the rest of year," he said.

"We are keen to have another look at Kurt (Tippett) and his form in the SANFL last week was very good."

"We've got some really strong internal competition in certain areas, in the forward/midfield area in particular, as well as ruck."

Moran is definitely the next big man in line for a recall with a hip injury ending Jonathon Griffin's season. The ruckman will be operated on in the coming weeks in a hope he'll be ready for pre-season.

"He's been playing with that for probably the last four to six weeks and I think has done a really good job to find different ways to prepare to play a game and carry it into a game and still perform," Craig said.
