Crows out to pressure Cats

Crows out to pressure Cats

Adelaide coach Neil Craig believes his team can play a similar pressure game to the one Collingwood used to thrash Geelong in Round 9.

Craig said the Magpies' 86-point drubbing of the Cats back in May had proved a handy template for the Crows' upcoming clash at AAMI Stadium on Friday.

"Collingwood's pressure on that night was probably as good as pressure you've seen all year from any club in the competition. Whether we can emulate that pressure is yet to be seen but we talk about that pressure all of the time," Craig said.

"I think we are a renowned as a club that puts that type of pressure on and that'll be our challenge tomorrow night because we are playing a class football team, make no mistake."

The Crows also believe stopping Gary Ablett will go along way towards causing a Round 14 upset. Robert Shirley will more than likely tag Ablett but Craig said Nathan van Berlo or Richard Douglas may also be called upon to run with the Cats' superstar.

Craig said it would take a collective effort to diminish Ablett's impact.

"The thing I like about Gary is if you look at the way he accumulates possessions, it's a bit like (Chris) Judd, it's contested ball which makes him really hard to play on," he said.

"He tends to get them not down in the defence, he gets them in the midfield and forward so he's a very, very dangerous player based on those two criteria."

The Crows also had some selection dilemmas this week with Kris Massie and Brad Symes included to replace the injured Andrew McLeod and Luke Jericho.

Finding a place in the squad for Jonathon Griffin was another talking point for selectors.

Griffin was the Crows' first choice ruckman at the start of the season but a dip in form and some minor injury problems has seen him on the sidelines.

Craig said it was difficult to assess whether Adelaide needed three big men - Ivan Maric, Kurt Tippett and Griffin – playing in the one side.

"We continue to have that debate at match committee as well and so there's times that we have played the three of them but most of the time we haven't and I think that'll probably be the way we go, not to play three talls," he said.

Craig said the team needed to increase the pace of its game after a disappointing match against the Brisbane Lions.

"We need to elevate the speed of our ball movement. The speed of our ball movement against Brisbane in the first half was probably at an acceptable level, (but) still not at a level we want," he said.

"Certainly the second half no, no, it was awful and we accept that; hopefully tomorrow night, irrespective of the result, in the press conference we'll be able to say 'That was better."
