Demetriou staying put

Demetriou staying put

AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou has denied he is set to step down from his position, and said he is very much looking forward to 2008.

A report on The Bulletin website suggested that the AFL head was set to step down from the position he took up in 2003. The report said the AFL was searching for a new CEO after Demetriou told the AFL commission he wanted to step away.

But the 46-year-old denied he was considering leaving his position and said he remains committed to the AFL, despite suggestions he was looking for a quieter life.

"I have no intention of resigning my role and I was not contacted at any point for the story that has been produced," Demetriou said.

"I am looking forward already to the 2008 season and the work that myself, our executive team and our staff will need to do with our 16 clubs to match such an outstanding result we have just posted this year, with all-time records in attendance, participation figures and club membership numbers," he said.

Demetriou took over the job in September in 2003 from Wayne Jackson and has overseen some of the AFL's biggest-ever financial deals, including the landmark $780 million broadcast agreement.
