Fevola: Century out of reach

Carlton forward Brendan Fevola says he believes his chance to kick 100 goals in a season may have come and gone, and he doesn’t expect to get close to the mark at AFL level ever again.
Fevola became the first player in AFL/VFL history to be stranded on 99 goals when his seven-goal haul in the Blues' Round 22 clash with Hawthorn left him one short of the magical milestone.
Mercurial Hawk Lance Franklin brought up his hundred in the first quarter of the same match and went on to claim the Coleman Medal with a tally of 102.
Speaking at the Blues' best-and-fairest count where he finished third behind skipper Chris Judd and midfielder Marc Murphy, Fevola predicted that his role would change over the next few years.
"For us to be a better team, I don’t think I need to be kicking 100 goals," he said.
"Hopefully I kick maybe a 60 or a 70 and you get two or three other blokes kicking over 30 or 40 and getting six or seven players kicking over 20 goals."
"For me to be aiming for 100 goals would probably be a bit selfish and I hope I don't ever get there, just from the fact that for us to be better, I don’t need to be kicking 100 goals."
Fevola said his priority next year will be to do whatever it takes to help Carlton to qualify for the finals for the first time since 2001.
He noted that he and Ryan Houlihan are the only players on the club's list to have played finals football for Carlton, and said the expectation is growing that next season will be a watershed one for the Blues.
"I'm happy with the season I had and to get 99 goals is great, but the main objective for us as a group … is to play finals and hopefully we can do that next year."
