Hawks v Cats, snippets
TURNING POINT: Lance Franklin's two missed shots in time on in the third quarter hurt the Hawks. One was 45 out, the other from only 20 metres. For a forward of Franklin's standing in the game, they should have been converted.
CLASSIC GRAB: Cyril Rioli took a screamer on the Southern Stand wing in the third quarter. Outnumbered two to one, Rioli used Harry Taylor as a step ladder to take the mark of the night. It drew a smile from Alastair Clarkson in the coaches' box.
STAR MAN: For a Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel has a happy knack of flying under the radar. He found the ball 36 times and bagged two goals. But it was what he did without the ball which impressed most. He laid 10 tackles in a high-octane game.
ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: Luke Hodge's error will be the one which stays in the memories of most, but Chance Bateman and Xavier Ellis both made monumental blunders earlier. Bateman squared the ball to pinpoint Enright, who goaled, and Ellis coughed up a handball under pressure which also resulted in a Geelong major.
UNSUNG HERO: Campbell Brown played forward in a surprise move. His two goals and seven marks only told part of the tale. His presence in attack prevented Tom Harley from picking off opposition kicks at will. Harley was still serviceable, but Brown more than did his job.
