Australia's equestrian campaign has ended without a gold medal with Edwina Alexander and Matt Williams unable to challenge for a medal in the individual jumping final.
After Laurie Lever was eliminated in the first round after picking up eight penalty points, Alexander and Williams went through to the final round of 22 having picked up one mistake of four points each.
Carrying over those points, they needed other riders to make mistakes, but Williams' chances were dashed when his mount Leconte hit five jumps and he took another 20 penalties to make 24, meaning he ended up 21st overall.
Alexander made one error on her second round meaning she had eight points overall. When four of the riders carrying over four points from Round A went clear in Round B, her medal hopes were dashed and she finished equal 10th.
