Jamaica's brilliant run continues

Veronica Campbell-Brown continued a brilliant Olympic Games for Jamaica by successfully defending her 200 metres title in Beijing on Thursday.

Following victories in the 100 and 200m for Usain Bolt, a clean sweep in the women's 100m and gold in the 400m hurdles for Melaine Walker, Campbell-Brown powered to victory in the Bird's Nest Stadium in a new personal best of 21.74 seconds.

Athens runner-up Allyson Felix of America again had to settle for silver in 21.93secs with another Jamaican, Kerron Stewart, claiming the bronze.

The contrast between American and Jamaican sprinting was demonstrated again in the 4x100m relays, where the US team dropped the baton in both the men's and women's races.

Jamaica cruised to victory in the second semi-final with Campbell-Brown running the anchor leg 90 minutes after her 200m triumph.

There was at least an American 1-2-3 in the men's 400m, although not in the expected order as defending champion Jeremy Wariner was surprisingly beaten into second place by team-mate LaShawn Merritt.

World record holder Dayron Robles duly won the 110m hurdles in a race robbed of much of its excitement by the absence of Chinese superstar Liu Xiang through injury.

Portugal's Nelson Evora won a high-class triple jump with 17.67m, the biggest jump in the world this year, finishing ahead of Great Britain's Phillips Idowu (17.62) and Leevan Sands of the Bahamas (17.59).

The Netherlands' Maarten van der Weijden won the gold medal in the inaugural men's 10km open water swim at a rain-swept Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.

Van Der Weijden, who was won a battle with leukaemia, put in a great sprint in the final 500m of the race.

The Dutchman got the better of David Davies of Great Britain and Thomas Lurz of Germany to win in a time of one hour, 51 minutes and 51.6 seconds.

Russia's Olga Kaniskina claimed the gold medal in the women's 20km walk with a new Olympic record time of 1:26.31.

Kjersti Tysse Platzer of Norway came in second, clocking 1:27.07 to take silver, setting a national record in the process.

Elisa Rigaudo of Italy won the bronze.

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson of Great Britain won the final gold of the Qingdao Sailing regatta with a fifth-place finish in the medal race to finish on 45 points overall in the Star class.

Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada of Brazil earned silver with a third-place finish and 53 points overall. Fredrik Loof and Anders Ekstrom of Sweden took bronze.

Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz of Spain took gold in the Tornado class ahead of Australia's Glenn Ashby and Darren Bundock and Santiago Lange and Carlos Espinola of Argentina winning bronze.

Defending champion Andrey Moiseev of the Russia won the gold medal in the men's modern pentathlon with 5,632 points.

Edvinas Krungolcas of Lithuania took silver medallist, with Krungolcas' compatriot Andrejus Zadneprovskis claiming bronze.

South Korea's Son Tae-jin won gold in the men's -68kg taekwondo, with compatriot Lim Su-jeong taken the women's -57kg division.

Defending champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States won the gold medal in the women's beach volleyball.

They beat China's Tian Jia and Wang Jie in straight sets 21-18 21-18.

Earlier, Zhang Xi and Xue Chen of China beat Renata Ribeiro and Talita Rocha of Brazil 2-0 to win bronze.

Uzbekistan's Artur Taymazov defended his title in the men's freestyle 120kg Wrestling by defeating Russia's Bakhtiyar Akhmedov, while Shirvani Muradov added another wrestling gold for
