Australia's Naazmi Johnston has performed admirably in the opening night of the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around qualification.
Johnston performed two rotations on Thursday, the rope and the hoop, finishing the night in 22nd place with a further two rotations to go in qualifying on Friday night.
The 19-year-old scored 14.075 with the rope and 15.300 with the hoop to receive a total of 29.375 from the judges, with Russian Olga Kapranova in the lead with a score of 36.825.
"I am pretty happy with my rope routine. I left out one of the difficult skills, the illusions, but that's ok," Johnston said.
"I am really happy with my hoop routine and the mark. I have got in the high 15s before at an international competition, but this is great."
"My goals here at the Games are to perform perfect routines. I finished 22nd here tonight. I am currently ranked 64 in world so to finish in the top 20 would be wonderful."
The top 10 gymnasts after Friday's second round of qualification will progress through to Saturday's final.
