BRIT BACKED ON BETFAIR
Andy Murray into 30s at Wimbledon on Betfair after trading at 75
Top Brit Andy Murray saw off German Tommy Haas on Wimbledon's centre court overnight, and the Scot is now available to back at a best price of 30 on Betfair's betting exchange to win the Wimbledon men's singles title in 2008. That is a considerable reduction from the highest price traded on the same outcome before the tournament, 75.
Murray didn't have it all his own way today, though, as his tough opponent battled back from a set down to level at 1-1. That will have set off a few butterflies in the stomachs of Murray's backers, who were confident enough to match prices as low as 1.1 for a Murray win after he had taken the first set.
At 1-1, Betfair's markets had the two, understandably, close in the betting. Murray was 1.85 at that stage, his opponent 2.12. But Haas was never in control of the match and Murray stepped up a gear, making good use of his stylish backhand, to wrap up the third-round match up in four sets. A 3-0 win for Murray was matched at a low of 1.27.
Elsewhere, there was an interesting result on court two for Janko Tipsarevic - the man who sent popular American Andy Roddick crashing out. He took the scalp of another big name, No.25 seed Dmitri Tursunov. Tipsarevic, the bespectacled intellectual Serbian, has been matched at Betfair's maximum price of 1000 in the tournament winner market to the tune of £385. He is now available to lay at just 65.
Predictably, the two clear favourites in Betfair's tournament winner market as it stands are Wimbledon's No.1 cardigan wearer and five-time champion Roger Federer (1.73) and Spanish heart-throb Rafael Nadal (3.65). Nadal plays Nicolas Kiefer next on centre court.
