Bulls on top of Redbacks

Bulls on top of Redbacks

29/02/2008 6:59 PM

Queensland's pace bowlers have restricted South Australia's first innings to 237 on day one of the Pura Cup match at Adelaide Oval.

Ashley Noffke, with an immaculate 3-43 off 26 overs, Scott Brant (3-53), Chris Swan (2-40), Shane Watson (1-28) and Ryan Broad (1-5) shared all 10 wickets for the Bulls as the Redbacks' recognised batsmen submitted feebly on a green-tinged pitch in fine, warm conditions.

Queensland was 0-8 at stumps after opening batsmen Broad (two not out) and Greg Moller (two not out) had survived four overs.

SA slipped to 7-100 before being revived by an eighth-wicket partnership of 76 off 132 balls between Mark Cleary (57) and Ryan Harris (55 not out) and a 10th-wicket stand of 59 off 110 balls between Harris and Dan Cullen (27).

Openers Jake Brown (10) and Dan Harris (four) departed in the first 10 overs, with debutant Brown caught low in the gully by Chris Simpson off Noffke and Harris taken at third slip by Watson off Brant.

Delmont was bowled by Swan nearing lunch, and SA went to the break - to hear Jason Gillespie's retirement announcement - at 3-67 off 29 overs, with Ferguson on 24 and Dan Christian one.

Christian (one) went in the sixth over after lunch, well caught by diving wicketkeeper Chris Hartley off Noffke, and Ferguson left four overs later, cutting the consistent Noffke straight to Moller at point.

The procession continued with Shane Deitz (14) caught by Watson at second slip off Swan, who left the field later with groin soreness.

Graham Manou (seven), who had won the toss, edged Watson to Hartley, who dived wide to his right again to pluck another good catch - and the Bulls were well placed to give skipper Jimmy Maher an outright win in his farewell appearance.

Left-hander Cleary's defiant 73-ball knock ended when he edged Brant to Hartley, Gillespie (one) presented left-armer Brant with his third wicket, this time caught by Martin Love at first slip, and Cullen eventually succumbed to the second new ball and was bowled by Broad.
