Gillespie gives Redbacks advantage

Gillespie gives Redbacks advantage

23/11/2007 6:42 PM

Jason Gillespie has produced a stunning seven-wicket performance to help South Australia restrict Western Australia's first innings to 236 on day one of the Pura Cup match at Adelaide Oval.

Gillespie finished with 7-58 off 20 swift, immaculate overs - his best figures at Adelaide Oval - and the Warriors' 73-over first innings ended after they lost 5-82 off 12 overs in the first hour after tea.

The Redbacks were 1-75 off 20 overs at stumps - 161 behind - with Matthew Elliott on 27 and Callum Ferguson 43 after Mark Cosgrove (0) was lbw to Mathew Inness in the second over.

Adam Voges and Brad Hogg led WA's batting with contrasting half-centuries; Voges compiling a patient 58 (one six, five fours) off 155 balls and Hogg thrashing a 42-ball 68, with six sixes and five fours.

Hogg hammered 29 off the 64th over - left-arm spinner Darren Lehmann's sixth - with a six, a four, three successive sixes and a single. The sixes and the four were swept over forward square leg.

It equalled David Hookes' record for the most runs taken off an over in a first-class match at Adelaide Oval. Hookes hit his 29 off Victorian leg-spinner Colin Thwaites in 1976-77 while carving out five centuries in six innings to vault into Australia's team for the Centenary Test against England at the MCG.

Ryan Harris (0-47 off 16 overs) and Paul Rofe (1-37 off 14) gave Gillespie economical pace support, and part-time bowlers Lehmann and Cosgrove took a wicket each.

Gillespie grabbed the first two wickets by nailing debutant Liam Davis (eight) lbw padding up and tempting Chris Rogers (14) to edge a drive to wicketkeeper Graham Manou.

WA was 2-72 off 28 overs at lunch, and Justin Langer (34) went in the ninth over after the break, nicking a defensive push to Manou off Rofe. Langer had been dropped on two by Nathan Adcock, to his left at first slip, off Rofe.

Theo Doropoulos, another debutant, was bowled for 23 after being deceived in flight by Lehmann six overs before tea.

Gillespie struck again by having Luke Ronchi (nine) caught at first slip by Adcock off the final ball before tea, leaving WA 5-154 off 61 overs. And Gillespie removed Voges and Aaron Heal (0) with successive balls soon after the break - bowling Voges and having Heal caught at second slip by Elliott.

Hogg's heroics ended when he was bowled by Cosgrove, and Gillespie bowled Inness (five) and had Ben Edmondson (0) taken low by Elliott at second slip to end the innings.
