Holding resigns in ICC protest

5/07/2008 5:32:23 AM

West Indies legend Michael Holding has resigned from the International Cricket Council over its decision to change the result of the controversial 2006 Oval Test between England and Pakistan.

Pakistan was originally deemed to have forfeited the game after it refused to return to the field following an allegation of ball tampering from umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove.

The tourists were later cleared of the latter offence and Thursday saw the outcome of the match changed from an England win to a draw.

Holding agrees Pakistan was innocent of ball-tampering but insists its refusal to retake the field should have been punished.

"When you take certain actions, you must be quite happy to suffer the consequences," Holding said.

"That game should never, ever be a draw.

"I have just written my letter of resignation to the ICC Cricket Committee because I cannot agree with what they've done.

"A lot of things that are happening today I don't want to be involved with, so I've moved on."
