Injured Ponting flies home

Injured Ponting flies home

05/07/2008 7:23 AM

Australia captain Ricky Ponting will return home from the West Indies after being ruled out of the final one-day international on Sunday.

Ponting missed Friday's fourth one-dayer with a wrist injury which is also set to keep him out of Sunday's match in St Kitts.

Cricket Australia confirmed, therefore, the decision was made for him to return home as soon as possible.

Cricket Australia physiotherapist Justin Steer said: "Ricky has a tendon injury in his right wrist and he will be flying home to see a specialist in Melbourne."

"Given his unavailability for the last match of the series we see this as a good opportunity to have him see the specialist at his earliest convenience."

Michael Clarke will take over from Ponting as captain for the remainder of the tour, with Mike Hussey as his deputy.

Australia currently leads the five-match series 3-0.
