West Australian paceman Steve Magoffin has begun the Sheffield Shield season taking 10 wickets in a match for the first time and is hoping to cap it off with a Warriors win over the Blues on the final day.
Magoffin claimed 6-66 in the Blues' second innings to go with his 4-36 in the first dig and claim a career-best 10-102, but the game is still in the balance with the Warriors going to stumps at 0-52 in chase of 223 for victory.
Taking 10 wickets for the first time is a proud achievement for Magoffin but he knows the game is far from decided.
"It's a pretty proud moment for me. I've looked up at that honour board in the changeroom really wanting to get my name up there and it feels really great to achieve that," Magoffin said.
"The wicket's nice to bowl on with some pace and carry, which is fantastic to see back here at the WACA and that made me feel pretty good running into bowl. I knew that if I put enough balls in the right area and got an edge it was going to get caught."
"They batted well, especially Dom Thornely. They've put the total on the board and you can't just cruise to 220 in any game. It's going to be tough for our guys to get through the new ball and a tricky start in the morning."
The Warriors coaching staff and new strength and conditioning coach Mathew Inness have decided to give the bowlers shorter spells this season and it is certainly working for Magoffin, who took wickets in seven of his eight spells on day three.
"It seems to have worked this game. It's a different approach to me and my preparation this year in a lot of ways has been slightly different. Across a full day of cricket I certainly felt as though I was pretty much fresh for each spell after not having bowled that nine or 10 over spell at the start of the day," he said.
"We are trying to give all our bowlers shorter spells and that's what the research that our coaching staff has done shows that we should. It's about making sure we bowl peak overs every time with our ball in the hand and you don't always have to bowl an eight- or nine-over spell to get results."
While continued good performances will put Magoffin's name up in lights for national selectors, thinking about that has hurt his form in the past. What he is focused on, though, is putting in a consistent full season this year after tiring out last summer.
"Since I started playing I've always tried to better the season before. Last year was my most productive year in terms of wickets and I'm hoping to better that given I didn't finish last year off how I wanted to," he said.
"I had a goal of around 40 wickets in mind and I wasn't quite as effective in the last two or three games due to the workload I had before Christmas. I'm hoping again to better that but I don't have a specific number of wickets in mind."
