Rogers loving change

Rogers loving change

The weather might be a bit colder than what he is used to at this time of the year and he admits he may have to change which footy team he supports but other than those small details former Western Australian opener Chris Rogers is settling in well to life as a Bushranger.

The left-handed opener is expected to make his debut for Victoria when the Bushrangers kick off their season with a Ford Ranger Cup clash against South Australia in Adelaide on Sunday followed by their opening four day fixture of the season against the Redbacks, beginning at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.

Rogers, who played one Test for Australia against India last summer, joins the Vics having compiled more than 10,000 runs in 125 first class matches and he has just come off a successful county season in England with Derbyshire.

The 31-year-old says he is itching for a fresh start with the Bushrangers as he looks to get a second chance at Test level after making just four and 15 in his one-off appearance for Australia in Perth last year when filling in for the injured Matthew Hayden.

"It's a big move to change states and it's going to be a big challenge but one I am looking forward to," Rogers said at Victorian training on Tuesday.

Rogers admits he has slipped in the international pecking order with Hayden, Phil Jacques and Simon Katich all ahead of him for an opening spot in the Test team but that has only made him more desperate to succeed for Victoria this summer.

"It's hard to say where I am at (in terms of an Australian call-up) and obviously there are a few guys who are opening and doing quite well so maybe I am a little bit further back now but that just means I have got to get a few more runs this summer."

After scoring a half-century on his debut for new club Essendon last weekend, Rogers is hoping to take that form into Sunday's opening one-dayer for the Vics and admits the chance to play one-day cricket for the Bushrangers was a major factor behind his decision to leave the west.

"I was not playing in the one day side for WA and I really wanted to be doing that and hopefully that will help me in my chase for higher honours."

"It's up to me to perform in the one day side and that is a good challenge but I would like to think I would get a run (in the Ford Ranger Cup team) for Victoria."

Rogers said another major factor behind his decision to move to Victoria was the chance to play on the MCG more often and he is confident he will cope with the softer, slower wicket in Melbourne after years of playing on the bouncier, faster wickets of Perth.

"I can't complain about that, it's something I will be looking forward to and to play on the MCG is a fantastic honour," he said.

"I have played a fair bit in England now and I don't imagine it (batting on the MCG wicket) being too dissimilar to the wickets you get over there so hopefully I can adapt pretty quickly."
