Middlesbrough loses again

25/07/2008 10:25 AM

Middlesbrough was undone by another late goal on Thursday night as they went down 1-0 to Vitoria Guimaraes in their second and final match of the Algarve Cup.

Boro, who conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Celtic in their tournament opener on Tuesday night, were the better side but lost to a brilliant free-kick from substitute Dinis.

The result ended Boro's hopes of winning the competition.

Cardiff claimed the Algarve Challenge Cup after following up their defeat of Guimareas with a 1-0 win over Celtic in Portugal's Estadio Algarve.

Joe Ledley scored the decisive goal in the first half as the Coca-Cola Championship side took advantage of a lack of cutting edge in the Scottish champions' display.

West Ham failed to become the first English side to beat the Major League Soccer All-Stars after going down 3-2 at BMO Field in Toronto.

The MLS All-Stars, driven by impressive first-half goals from Argentinian Christian Gomez and Mexico's Cuauhtemoc Blanco and a second-half penalty from Canada's Dwayne De Rosario, turned on the style in front of a stadium record sell-out crowd of 20,844 to cancel out two goals from England striker Dean Ashton.

The victory continued the All-Stars' winning run against foreign opposition since the introduction of the format in 2003, with Fulham, Chelsea and Celtic among their previous victims.

Hibernian's dented confidence was dealt another blow when they were ripped apart by a rampant Barcelona in Thursday's friendly at Murrayfield.

While Josep Guardiola cruised to victory in his first game as Barca boss, Hibs counterpart Mixu Paatelainen was left facing the prospect of lifting his players for a second time with the start of the new season still several weeks away.

A 4-0 aggregate defeat to Swedish outfit Elfsborg saw the Edinburgh side crash out of the Intertoto Cup earlier this month - Barca racked up as many goals in the opening 26 minutes.

An Eidur Gudjohnsen double and goals from Lionel Messi and Pedro in the first half were followed by further breakthroughs from Bojan and Yaya Toure after the break as Hibs were outclassed.

In other friendly matches overnight, Tottenhan drew 1-1 with Hercules, Lyon outclassed Nancy 3-0 and Kaizer Chiefs defeated the Orlando Pirates 2-0.
