Rennes upstaged by Norwegians

15/08/2008 8:52 AM

Norwegian league leaders Stabaek stunned French side Rennes with a 2-1 win in the first leg of their UEFA Cup second qualifying round clash on Friday morning.

Mike Kjolo was on target twice for Stabaek before Moussa Sow pulled one back to give the Ligue 1 side hope heading into the second leg in a fortnight's time.

Goals from Serdar Tasci and Ciprian Marica helped Stuttgart earn a 2-1 advantage at home to Hungarian side Gyor, while the other Bundesliga team in action - Hertha Berlin - managed a 2-0 triumph at Interblock Ljubljana of Slovenia thanks to Marko Pantelic's double.

There were mixed fortunes for the two English sides in action with Aston Villa recording a convincing 4-1 triumph at Hafnarfjordur - Liverpool target Gareth Barry among the scorers - but Manchester City going down 1-0 at home to FC Midtjylland.

Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna have work to do after managing only a goalless draw in the home leg of their tie against Croatian outfit Hajduk Split.

Inacio Pia struck twice as Serie A side Napoli ran out 3-0 winners at Albanian minnows Vllaznia.

Brondby and Lech Poznan all but booked their berths in the first round proper with 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Haka Valkeakoski and Grasshoppers respectively, while Young Boys overcame Debrecen 4-1 and Salzburg stormed to victory by the same scoreline at Suduva.

The tie between Legia Warsaw and FC Moscow is finely poised after the Russian side's 2-1 win in Poland, while Djurgarden against Rosenborg is also far from decided following the Swedish team's 2-1 home triumph in the first leg.
