Once at Old Trafford he became firmly committed to the cause and progressed through the ranks, turning professional in 1993 and making his senior debut a year later in a League Cup.

It was the beginning of a remarkable story of a one-club man who has never shown any intention in moving away from his boyhood team.

Scholes has only been interested in playing football - not the luxurious accompaniments - and it is exactly why he is one of Ferguson's favourites, and reportedly the only one not to encounter the manager's infamous hairdryer treatment.
