Turkish delight for Kewell

Turkish delight for Kewell

04/07/2008 1:24 PM

Socceroos star Harry Kewell has signed a deal with Galatasaray and will play with the Turkish champions for the next three years.

The 29-year-old turned down a contract offer with Liverpool in May and entered the current transfer window as a free agent, with many clubs across Europe chasing his services.

Kewell was rumoured to be heading to Scottish team Celtic, Italian giant Roma or English Premier League outfit Portsmouth, but Galatasaray swooped first.

The signing was confirmed on Galatasaray's official website and the deal will see Kewell remain with the Turkish powerhouse until at least the completion of the 2010/11 season.

Kewell played against Galatasaray when he was with Leeds, but was injured when Liverpool met the Turkish club during the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League campaign.

The Socceroos star has been left out of Graham Arnold's 18-man squad for the Beijing Olympics, with Newcastle's Jade North, Melbourne's Archie Thompson and David Carney from English club Sheffield United selected as the squad's three over-age players.
