Leishman scorches on Nationwide

Young Victorian Marc Leishman has become the sixth Australian winner on the Nationwide Tour this year after clinching a runaway victory at the WNB Golf Classic in Texas.

The 24-year-old proved too strong throughout the tournament, carding rounds of 67, 66, 66 and 68 to finish on 21-under - a massive 11 shots ahead of second-placed American Keoke Cotner.

The margin was the Nationwide Tour's equal-largest in history.

It was a good tournament overall for the Australian contingent, with five players placing in the top 10.

Aron Price picked up his third top-10 result this year with third place on nine-under, while Greg Chalmers and Won Joon Lee finished in a four-way tie for fourth, one stroke further back, alongside Americans Spencer Levin and Darron Stiles.

Cameron Percy, who returned to the tour after the birth of his second child two weeks ago, was the fifth Aussie to finish in the top 10.

Leishman joins Jarrod Lyle, Ewan Porter, Gavin Coles, Price and Chalmers as Australian winners on the PGA's secondary tour in 2008.

The victory - played in challenging conditions - also rocketed Leishman into the top 25 on the money list.

"I was determined to get off to a good start," said Leishman, who birdied the par-5 second hole and made an eagle at the fourth to start his final round on Sunday.

Leishman moved from 56th to 19th place with his win, and with just three events to go this season is well-placed to claim his 2009 US Tour card.
