Bias-free track predicted

Bias-free track predicted

Flemington track manager Terry Watson does not believe the track bias which marred last month's Turnbull Stakes meeting will come into play on Derby Day.

Saturday's meeting will be the third on the redeveloped Flemington track, which has come under fire for its uneven racing pattern.

Punters were not sure what to make of the form from the Turnbull Stakes meeting, which saw jockeys fan wide in the straight, while on-pace runners close to the rail were favoured on Makybe Diva Stakes day in September.

But Watson is confident Flemington will provide a fair and even surface for all runners on Saturday.

There's been a couple of track walkers go out in the morning," Watson said. "And the track workers I've spoken to, they can't pick any section that's better than another."

"If they walk the track, and they're professionals, and they're saying before the meeting there's no glaring advantage to be on the rail or off the rail, so that's good."

That is music to the ears of trainer Mark Kavanagh, who will saddle up gun miler Divine Madonna in the Group One Myer Classic.

The mare, which possesses arguably the most electrifying finish of any galloper in Australia, was thwarted by a dynamite frontrunner's bias in last year's race.

"I'm just hoping the track presents itself favourably for a swooper tomorrow," Kavanagh said. "I can see a fair bit of tempo in the race. It's just all to do with how the track's playing."

The Flemington track was rated a Dead 4 on Friday morning after 5mm of overnight rain but Watson was confident the rating could be upgraded to a Good 3 by Saturday.

Sunny skies prevailed over Melbourne on Friday afternoon but showers are predicted to fall on Saturday.
