Hayes rapt with Guillotine

Hayes rapt with Guillotine

13/10/2008 12:06 PM

Master trainer David Hayes believes Yalumba Stakes placegetter Guillotine deserves to start favourite in next Saturday's BMW Caulfield Cup if he draws a decent barrier.

Buoyed after seeing Guillotine, third in the Yalumba, race more generously with the addition of pacifiers in the Yalumba, Hayes said he would not swap the grey four-year-old for any other in next Saturday's 2400m feature.

Not even a muddling tempo set by Yalumba winner Douro Valley could force Guillotine, who drops nine kilos to 50kg in the Caulfield Cup, to throw his head about like he did when fifth the previous Saturday in the Turnbull Stakes.

"If he did what he did in the Turnbull I would say he's no chance in the Caulfield Cup," Hayes said.

"If he draws a barrier and lobs along third or fourth with 50(kg) you'd be pretty good to catch him I reckon."

"If he draws a barrier he should be nearly favourite."

Littorio was still the $5 favourite for the Caulfield Cup after Saturday's races, ahead of Weekend Hussler ($5.50), Master O'Reilly ($7) and Guillotine ($11).

Hayes will have two other runners in the Cup in Zagreb and out-of-form VRC Derby winner Kibbutz.

He told punters they would be best served to forget Zagreb's last-start failure in the Turnbull.

Kibbutz would be better suited in the Melbourne Cup, Hayes said.

Hayes has won the Caulfield Cup twice, first with Fraar in 1993 then two years ago with Tawqeet, since taking over from his father Colin in 1990.
