High stakes for Takeover Target

High stakes for Takeover Target

20/06/2008 7:46 PM

The legend of Takeover Target will grow even further if he can beat some of Europe's best sprinters in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot in the early hours of Sunday morning (AEST).

Should the much-travelled sprinter win the $788,000 event, the feature sprint race during Royal Ascot's prestigious five-day carnival, he will have won at the highest level in four countries - Australia, Singapore, Japan and England.

On the evidence of his second earlier in the week in the King's Stand Stakes, Takeover Target will again be one of the main contenders this time.

Last year he ran fourth in the King's Stand to compatriot Miss Andretti before being running second in a tight finish to fellow veteran Soldier's Tale, who will be one of Takeover Target's 19 rivals this weekend.

The previous year he won the King's Stand Stakes, then a Group Two event, before running third in this race four days later.

Trainer Joe Janiak and jockey Jay Ford believe the rising nine-year-old, whose acceleration is not as sharp as it was previously, was now better suited to 1200m.

The Takeover Target camp received more good news on Thursday night when the sprinter drew gate two, which means he will be positioned near the grandstand rail.

That will enable Ford to pilot Takeover Target down the same path he tracked on Tuesday when second to Spanish sprinter Equiano. Locals believe that side will again provide the firmer going this weekend.

The English bookies have installed Sakhee's Secret, last year's July Cup winner, as the favourite at either $4.50 or $5. All five of Sakhee's Secret wins have been at 1200m and he ran well first-up this year over 1000m. Firm going is required for him to produce his best.

US Ranger and Marchand d'Or are also big hopes, according to punters.

The former is from the Aidan O'Brien yard, which has never tasted success in this race, but is yet to run in Group One company at 1200m. At his most recent start he ran fourth to Assertive, who incidentally has not been given much of a chance on Sunday.

Marchand d'Or, a French galloper, finished strongly to win over 1000m at Group Two level recently at his first run in six months. He has won at the elite level over this distance but is reportedly better in rain-affected going.

Soldier's Tale is shooting for back-to-back wins. The lightly raced seven-year-old, who has had just eight starts in his career, has not run since last year's Golden Jubilee. Trainer Jeremy Noseda will have had a strong read into the horse's chance through the King's Stand Stakes where he saddled up fourth-placed Fleeting Spirit.

Grand mare Seachange will fly the flag for New Zealand. She ran a game race in the Dubai Duty Free over a middle distance but did beat home subsequent Group One winner Creachadoir, who defeated Haradasun in the Lockhinge Stakes. Haradasun, of course, won earlier this week.

The six furlongs might be a shade short for Seachange but she will finish strongly.
