Maldivian remains favourite for next month's $1 million Australian Cup despite the five-year-old's inglorious effort in Saturday's CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Mark Kavanagh's star started favourite in Saturday's Group One race but never looked likely, finishing 13th in the field of 16 in the race won by Shinzig. Kavanagh had sounded a warning about Maldivian second-up in the race, but punters refused to heed it and paid the price.
But not content with having stuffed their pockets on Saturday, bookies still have Maldivian a $3.50 favourite for the Flemington weight-for-age classic on March 8.
Princess Coup, the New Zealand mare who stormed home for fourth on Saturday, has moved into equal second favourite at $6 with comeback galloper Eremein.
Sirmione, the Bart Cummings galloper who caused a massive upset in the Mackinnon Stakes over the same course and distance as the Australian Cup, is equal fourth favourite at $10 after charging home for seventh in the Orr. AJC Derby winner Fiumicino, who resumed with a 10th in the Orr, is also at that price.
Shinzig is $21 for the Australian Cup after his success on Saturday, while third-placed Rubiscent, who won the Underwood Stakes in the spring, is $12.
The market for the Newmarket Handicap (1200m), to be run on the same day, remained largely unchanged, with Weekend Hussler the outright favourite at $5.
The Cadbury Guineas is the third Group One on Super Saturday, with Playwright and Schilling currently the favourites at $7. Turffontein ($12) and Vivacious Spirit ($17), who both won at Caulfield on Saturday, are well in the market.
