O'Brien praying for rain

O'Brien praying for rain

While track staff at Randwick could do with some peace from the precipitation, Melbourne trainer Danny O'Brien is continuing his rain dance in the lead-up to Saturday's Doncaster Handicap.

O'Brien's seven-year-old Valedictum showed slashing form as he returned to the winner's circle for the first time in more than two years at Rosehill last weekend.

The victory on a boggy track and the absence of superstar Weekend Hussler has the Flemington-based trainer hopeful of a good result in the $1.8 million Group One event over 1600m in Sydney.

"We won on the heavy track on Saturday so it's not going to do us any harm," O'Brien told Sportal on Wednesday.

"It's still a few days out but it seems that they are going to have a significantly rain-affected track."

"Certain horses appreciate that more than others."

O'Brien said Valedictum had pulled up well from his breakthrough triumph.

"We went in expecting the horse to run well. We knew he would handle the wet even though he had not been on a wet track for two years. We were happy with the way he went," he said.

"They are always tough to win these mile races when there are 20 runners."

"Our horse has won a Group One mile before (Emirates Stakes 2005). He's well weighted, he's in good form and he's a live winning hope."

Premier jockey Steven King has been given the nod to ride Valedictum, O'Brien confirmed.

"Steven won the Emirates on him, knows the horse very well and we're happy with that," he said.

Meanwhile, a further 19mm of rain fell overnight on Tuesday but the race could still be run on a surface rated slow, according to track manager Dave Hodgson.

Hodgson said a couple of dry days in the lead up to the weekend will see the heavy nine track upgraded on Saturday.

"We have had a lot of rain, but it's been consistent rain, not one great downpour," Hodgson said.

"The drainage is very good here and with some wind and sunshine it'll dry out and it could be slow by Saturday."

Hodgson said a fine day was forecast for the Group One showcase which is headlined by females Forensics, Hot Danish and Eskimo Queen.
