Sebring has maintained his course for the two-year-old Triple Crown by taking out the Group One Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Seven days after claiming the Golden Slipper, Sebring ($2.60) backed up in the Sires, and after sitting outside the pace raced away for a comfortable victory, defeating Samantha Miss ($13) and Love and Kisses ($13).
Trainer Gai Waterhouse will now prepare Sebring for the Champagne Stakes (1600m) next week in a bid to emulate stablemate Dance Hero in claiming the two-year-old Triple Crown.
The victory was particularly sweet for jockey Blake Shinn, who had ridden Sebring in all of its four races except for the Golden Slipper, where he was suspended and replaced by Glen Boss.
"It was great. The owners were terrific through that period where I couldn't ride the horse. They knew I was down, but they always told me I'd be on him this week. He trained terrific on the track and he really done well and 1400m was no concern for us," Shinn said.
Despite his barnstorming win in last week's race, punters seemed a little worried about Sebring's ability to back-up and the late money came for Von Costa De Hero ($2.50), who had run an unlucky second to Sebring in the Slipper.
But the race panned out in Sebring's favour. Unlike last week, he jumped well and Shinn slipped forward to be outside Love and Kisses early on, leaving Von Costa De Hero trapped wide deep albeit on a slow pace.
Damien Oliver kicked Love and Kisses clear on straightening, but Shinn had plenty in reserve, asking Sebring for his effort in the final 300m. He sailed up to the leader and cruised to an easy win. Samantha Miss was the unlucky runner, getting cluttered up behind horses before getting through on the rail to nab second. Von Costa De Hero faded late to finish well back.
Sebring is now unbeaten in five starts and will no doubt be awarded two-year-old of the year at the end of the season.
