Weight the only worry for Magnus

Weight the only worry for Magnus

19/03/2008 11:31 AM

Sprinting bridesmaid Magnus will prove hard to beat in Saturday's Group One Galaxy Stakes at Randwick, trainer Peter Moody declared on Wednesday.

Speaking to Sportal from the Gold Coast where he was inspecting yearlings at the Magic Millions sale, Moody said Magnus, which has gate six in the 13-horse field, was in 'career-best form'.

"He should be hard to beat, shouldn't he on his last two runs," Moody said.

"The only concern is, I'm not worried about his weight but some of the horses down the bottom are in well. That is a concern."

Magnus has been allotted second top weight of 57kg for the $352,100 dash over 1100m, but must concede 3.5kg to 4.5kg to in-form sprinters such as Hurried Choice and Keen Commander, who ran one-two in the Challenge Stakes on March 1.

He will also have to give 7kg to Lee Freedman's last-start winner Gamble Me.

One thing in Magnus's favour is the absence of a champion in Saturday's field.

Magnus, last year's Galaxy winner, was runner-up to superstar three-year-old Weekend Hussler at his past two starts and has also twice placed behind Miss Andretti in Group One sprints in the past 14 months.
