Cooper commits to Dragons

13/05/2008 2:50 PM

Tuesday has been a day to remember for Matt Cooper, who has re-signed with the Dragons and been named in New South Wales' State of Origin squad.

A veteran of 149 first-grade games since making his debut for St George Illawarra early in the 2000 season, 29-year-old Cooper knocked back offers from several other clubs in committing until the end of 2011 as he looks to retire as a one-club player.

"I have always said that I wanted to be a one-club man and this new contract supports my aim," said the regular Blues and Kangaroos centre, who will next year play under coaching doyen Wayne Bennett.

"The Dragons have been such a big part of my life for many years and I am very happy to continue my career at the club. I feel I still have a lot to offer the club and I see a very bright future here about which I am excited."

"It is a pretty big day for me. Being picked for Origin and knowing that I am staying at the Dragons … I couldn't be happier."

St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust said the club is delighted the Shellharbour Sharks junior will remain on board until well into his 30s.

"Matt is an exceptional player and has been a high quality example of what the Dragons system can produce," Doust said.

"Matt is a popular player among the team, members, partners and supporters so it is great news for everyone that he has elected to stay for a further three years."
