Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg says rebel forward Sonny Bill Williams faces a 'long and lonely' stint on the sidelines after walking out on the club to play rugby union in France.
It's believed Williams has arrived in England en route to France where he plans to take up a two-year, $3m deal with Toulon despite having four years to run on his Canterbury contract.
The Dogs will serve Williams with an injunction preventing him, legally, from playing for Toulon.
"I'm determined to ensure that if he's not playing for the Bulldogs then he's simply not playing. There's a full stop at the end of that sentence," Greenberg told 2KY on Sunday.
"His contracted to us - he's got four more years to play with us - and if he determines that's not going to be the case, then it's going to be a long and lonely four years."
"There is no easy option for the NRL or us in this - we've got to stand up for what we believe in."
"We've made a significant investment in Sonny Bill Williams and the return hasn't come through."
Greenberg confirmed Williams' sudden departure had completely caught the club off guard.
The Dogs were of the belief the troubled star had overcome his recent grievances and was keen to see out the remainder of his contract.
"The news took me by surprise. My expectation's always been that that commitment would be honoured," Greenberg said.
"It defied logic when he (Williams' manager Khoder Nasser) said it to me."
"He said 'Sonny's left, he's had enough and he's gone'."
"I just think it's so unacceptable to walk out on a contract."
"The basic principle of delivering on your word and fulfilling your obligation to me is paramount."
"It's a tragic thing for the game. People need to be kept to their word."
The Dogs must somehow try and put the Williams drama behind and prepare for Monday night's showdown with St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium.
"The people I feel for are his (Williams') team-mates - guys who are working hard with him day in day out who haven't had that ability to talk to him and he hasn't had the courage and decency to talk to his team-mates," Greenberg said.
"It's shattering for them and I really feel that they've been let down."
