Fourteen-year-old local Tyler Wright has stunned her more experienced rivals to take out the Beachley Classic at Manly on Monday.
Wright, who was granted a wildcard into the event, defeated Brazil's Silvana Lima in the final to become the youngest winner of an ASP World Tour event.
"This is easily the best day of my life," Wright said. "I'm so stoked. I don't really have the words to describe it. I knew Silvana (Lima) would be dangerous out there so I just did my best to stick to my game plan and get waves."
After qualifying for the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships last week, Wright took her excellent form into the Beachley Classic, ousting reigning world champion Stephanie Gilmore, Jacqueline Silva and Amee Donohoe en route to the final.
"These are girls that all us grommets look up to and to just be competing with them is an honour," Wright said.
"I had no expectations whatsoever this week for myself and I think that really working in my favour."
"It's been an amazing two weeks. I think I am just going to go home and chill out and let it all sink in next."
Event host Layne Beachley, who announced her retirement from the sport last week, was stopped in the quarter-finals by Lima.
Beachley, however, remains in the hunt for an eighth world title when the tour moves to Peru next month.
"It's one of my favourite events," Beachley said of the Peru leg. "I came second there last year and hopefully I can go one better, then coming into Hawaii, that's always my strongest leg."
Lima was in solid form throughout the competition before falling short in the final. Despite the loss, she moves up to fifth place on the women's world ratings.
"It's really tough for me - I wanted to win, but it still feels pretty good because I'm moving up in the rankings just as the tour moves into South America," Lima said.
