Giteau not only out to get Carter

Giteau not only out to get Carter

24/07/2008 8:53 PM

Wallabies flyhalf Matt Giteau says his personal duel with All Blacks maestro Dan Carter is not his primary concern ahead of Saturday's Bledisloe Cup blockbuster.

Giteau's battle with coach Robbie Deans' former Crusaders protege will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the match but the 25-year-old insists shutting down his opposite number is not his sole focus in the lead up to his side's toughest assignment to date.

"Obviously when you're reviewing a team you look at your opposite number, certain traits that he does well," Giteau said.

"But more for me I don't look at that personal battle, I look at if the team wins ... that's more what I focus on."

Asked if Deans, who oversaw Carter's development into arguably the world's best rugby player during his time at the helm of the Crusaders, has revealed any of his former star's secrets, a guarded Giteau played a straight bat.

"Not really," he said. "Like I say, when you review players you tend to find common traits and things like that so Robbie's just been good more from a team point of view."

Giteau added: "I've said in the last couple of weeks that I think probably Dan Carter's the best flyhalf in world rugby at the moment."

"What an opportunity, it's great to measure yourself against these guys."

While Giteau will wear the No.10 jersey for the clash, he has the added benefit of another recognised ball-player and specialist flyhalf in Berrick Barnes to call on throughout the game.

"It makes a big difference, it takes a lot of pressure off me," Giteau said of his outside man's playmaking abilities.

"There might be times where I feel like if I want to run that I've got the confidence that Berrick's there and he's going to step straight up."

"He's got a great kicking game and he offers a lot in attack and for me he takes a lot of pressure off - he's been great."

Meanwhile, veteran wing Lote Tuqiri moved to hose down comments from former Wallabies skipper John Eales suggesting the once all-powerful All Blacks have lost their air of invincibility.

"They'll always have an aura," Tuqiri said.

"That black jersey always brings out something more in the guys who pull it on, probably the same as we do here (in pulling on the Australian jersey)."

"They've got a lot of young guys in that team but I guess they're sort of rebuilding as well but they'll always play well in that black jersey."

"They sort of won't let it (the jersey) down and it's going to be tough - it's always tough."
