Marinos slams Sanzar judiciary

Marinos slams Sanzar judiciary

29/08/2008 6:20 AM

South Africa team manager Andy Marinos slammed the Sanzar disciplinary process on Thursday with prop CJ van der Linde still waiting for the report on the four-week suspension handed down earlier this week.

The Springboks named a side for their game on Saturday against Australia without Van der Linde, and said they could not take a decision on whether or not to appeal before they had the facts of the decision before them.

"It is completely unsatisfactory," Marinos said.

"We wanted to look through the reasons of his suspension before lodging an appeal but have to date not received it. We simply cannot appeal on a bland Sanzar media release."

"We don't know why answers have not been forthcoming," Marinos added.

"I have requested SA Rugby's Christo Ferreira to follow up on the delay."

"I don't know whether the Aussies have had a reply," he said.

While Van der Linde has indicated he is happy not to appeal, the Boks have a different viewpoint, saying 'it is not for him to say, but rather a team decision'.

"We wanted to appeal and possibly have his sentence reduced for CJ's future and his disciplinary record," said Marinos.

Meanwhile, Australian flanker Rocky Elsom has been exonerated from his one week suspension handed down by the same disciplinary hearing after appealing the decision.

That clears him to be available for selection for the Tri-Nations match between Australia and South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Elsom had been suspended for one match by a Sanzar judicial committee after being cited for pulling down Springbok lock Victor Matfield at a lineout in Saturday's Tri Nations Test in Durban.

However a three-man Appeals Committee decided to set aside the suspension. Chairman Bruce Squire QC of New Zealand said he would give the reasons for the decision at a later date.

Elsom was on the teleconference hearing - which was hosted in Durban - along with Australia coach Robbie Deans and attorney John Pammenter SC.

The three-man panel was completed by Jannie Lubbe SC of South Africa and Dennis Wheelahan QC of Australia
