The withdrawal of top-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi was just the start of a day of surprises at the Austrian Open on Tuesday.
Seppi was forced out of the tournament with a groin injury while two more seeded players were sent packing later in the day as third seed Agustin Calleri and Olivier Rochus, seeded eight, lost their opening matches.
All 16 first-round matches at the red clay event had to be completed on Tuesday after rain washed out Monday's entire schedule.
Calleri's 6-4 6-4 loss to Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was the biggest upset, as the Argentine was thought to be a serious contender as the 2006 champion.
Garcia-Lopez, however, kept Calleri at bay for most of the match by forcing 14 break points, though he only managed to convert three of them.
Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic dispatched Rochus by rallying for a 3-6 6-4 6-0 triumph to set up a meeting with Brian Dabul.
Second-seeded Rainer Schuettler - seeing his first action since an impressive run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon - avoided the upset bug, but needed three sets to get past fellow German Andreas Beck, 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.
Things went a bit better for fourth-seeded Potito Starace, fifth seed Eduardo Schwank and Jurgen Melzer, the sixth seed, who all advanced with relatively easy straight-sets victories.
A pair of players just two days removed from winning their first ATP singles titles also continued their run of success.
Seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who captured the Mercedes Cup title on Sunday, advanced with a 6-3 6-3 win over Josselin Ouanna and Romania's Victor Hanescu - the winner at Gstaad this past weekend - moved into the second round with a 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7-2) win against Pablo Andujar.
Matthias Bachinger was named the lucky loser in place of Seppi, but his time in the draw was short-lived as Nicolas Devilder of France defeated him 6-3 6-3.
